COMMITTEE NEWS

The Committee for the Evening Honoring the Judiciary has been hard at work planning an exciting event for 2012. The event is scheduled for May 15, 2012. We have lined up an exciting speaker and are working on the other details to make the evening extra special. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details."

The Diversity Committee is busy planning for a Diversity CLE/fundraising event on March 2,2012. Additionally, one of its goals is to organize CABA’s presence in the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade, as well as CABA’s Martin Luther King Day Service Project.

The Tennis Tournament Committee is meeting to explore plans for a tennis tournament in the Spring.

The Program Committee has been hard at work getting some great speakers for our meetings. In June the speaker was the incoming Mississippi Bar president, Hugh Keeting. In August L. Governor Phil Bryant spoke and in October our speaker was Curtis Wilkie, author of “The Fall of the House of Zeus.”

In September, the Community Service/Pro Bono Committee had a Wills for Heroes event at the Ridgeland Police Department. There were more than 15 volunteers and over 30 first responders took advantage of the services that were offered to them. Wills, advanced health care directives, and powers of attorneys were the available documents that they could receive. The Clarion-Ledger came out to cover the event. The Committee is planning another Wills for Heroes event in conjunction with the Pearl Fire Department, scheduled for February of 2011. This event is expected to serve over 50 firemen. The Community Service/Pro Bono Committee is seeking to perform a third such event in Spring of 2012. If you would like to volunteer for this program, please contact Troy Odum of Blair & Bondurant, P.A. at troy@bbfirm.com.

The Women and Children Advocacy Committee is preparing for the Annual Legal Fair that is held in the spring of each year. We are in the process of contacting sponsors and organizations that are willing to participate at the Legal Fair. We anticipate the Legal Fair will be held at Mission First in April 2012. The Committee continues to work diligently to bring new and exciting ideas to our Annual Legal Fair. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Legal Fair.
